Book Donation

At the entrance to the central part of the city of Trincomalee district, Uvarmalai stands tall with a forest that is surrounded by the sea on all sides and is a natural wonder. Like Swami Vivekananda, who walked on the land with an upright gait and a firm heart, our Uvarmalai Vivekananda College today walks with its head held high, aiming at the crowning motto of education, discipline and cleanliness, with an upright and direct gaze and the grace of Kannagi Ambal.

The founder of our college, the late Mr. V. Velupillai, with the ideal vision and lofty thoughts that the future of the children and wealth of the people of Uvarmalai should be noble, cleared the land that was covered in dense forest with the generous support of the people of Uvarmalai, and with his tireless efforts and hard work, built a 70' x 20' building with a roof made of coconut thatch and named it Uvarmalai Tamil Vidyalayam as a temple for imparting knowledge. On Monday, 10th of May 1978, with 97 students and 04 teachers, Mr. A. Thangavel was the first principal. It was formally inaugurated by the Honorable Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, I. R. Sampanthan, when he was a Member of Parliament, and was handed over to the government by Mr. V. Velupillai. It is recorded and remembered in many magazines of our college that the foundation of this college was due to the hard work of the founder of the college, the people of Uvarmalai, the Village Development Association, Principal A. Thangavel, Assistant Government Agent Sri. V. Sampasiva Iyer and many other well-wishers.
In the four years following the initial period, the number of students in the school increased to 400 and the number of teachers to 14. When Mr. K. Balachandra Iyer took office as the principal, our school was upgraded to a Grade II school in 1984 and G.C.E. (O/L) classes were started. In 1991, during the time when Mr. A. Mahadevan was the principal, the Advanced Arts department was started. Based on this, our school was upgraded to a 1C school and named as Uvarmalai Vivekananda Maha Vidyalayam.
In 1992, after Mr. C. Navaratnam took office as the principal, the first prize-giving ceremony after 14 years of the school's inception was held at the cultural hall. During this, the first magazine, Malaiyaruvi, was published. In 1994, the Mathematics and Science Department was started and upgraded to a 1AB school and the name was changed to Uvarmalai Vivekananda College and it is still standing tall today. In 2001, it was a historical achievement that 50 percent (57) of our college students passed the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination above the cut-off mark. The Vivekananda Kalaiyaranga is a major achievement in the physical development of our college and stands tall in the sky. The principal worked with determination to complete the construction of this Kalaiyaranga at any cost. Mr. C. Navaratnam. With his tireless efforts and the help of the late Member of Parliament Mr. A. Thangathurai and the help of the Education Secretaries who were in service from time to time, the foundation stone was laid by the then Governor of the North and East, Gamini Fonseka and opened in 2006. During the same Principal's time, the foundation stone of the student hostel, which was a major need of the students, was also laid and opened in 2010 during the time of the Principal, Mr. U. Selvanayagam. In the line of Principals who supported this rapidly growing college, Mr. S. Navaratnam, Principal, retired after serving the college for about 16 years (1992 – 2008). It is noteworthy that the college community still remembers his service as the most distinguished in the history of the college.
Following the Principal, Mr. C. Navaratnam, Mr. N. Wijendran, who is currently serving as the Zonal Education Director of the Trincomalee Education Zone, Mr. U. Selvanayagam, the retired Director of Education, Mr. S. Mathiyazhagan, the Divisional Education Officer serving in the Trincomalee Kuchavali Zone, Mr. S. Anandasivam, and Mr. V. Thavaraja, led our college well during their tenure through excellent management. It is noteworthy that the Technical Department was also started (2017) during the tenure of Mr. S. Anandasivam. The great support given by the Vice Principals, the Management Team, the dedicated teaching staff, the School Development Committee, the Old Students' Association and other well-wishers is very important. Following them, Mr. K. Ravidas took charge on 2017.10.23 and is leading the college well under his excellent management. He is supported by the School Development Committee, its Secretary Mr. V. Pushpakaran, and the Old Students' Association, its Secretary Mrs. A. Krithi.

During these years, our college students have achieved many national achievements in the fields of arts, commerce, mathematics and science and in co-curricular activities, especially in Tamil proficiency competitions, social science competitions, IT skill competitions, aesthetic competitions, and sports. Moreover, hundreds of students have attained high positions and obtained high degrees. This small record is not enough to express the great achievements of our college, which has grown tremendously in a short period of time. Furthermore, our college has been working in accordance with the motto of education, discipline and cleanliness, and in accordance with our mission statement and mission statement, to produce excellent students and provide the country with good citizens.
